One of the reasons we started Squirrel Sisters is because we found that there really wasn’t much available on the market that genuinely was healthy. So many products claim to be natural and healthy but if you look at the ingredients the majority are actually full of nasties like syrups, pastes, concentrated fruit juices and other ingredients that claim to be better than sugar but actually aren’t. We call it ‘perceived health’ because it looks healthy (ish) and claims to be healthy but actually if you look a little deeper you will realise it’s not as great as it’s making itself out to be.
We only use whole dates to bind and sweeten our bars, we don’t add any free sugars (like coconut sugar, coconut nectar, date syrup, glucose syrup etc)… which means we have been certified by Sugarwise. We talk about Sugarwise a lot and have preciously written a little blog post on it but realise that many of you might be interested to find out more about the company and why we have been certified…
Here’s a little explanation from the team at Sugarwise:
Sugarwise is proud to certify the Squirrel Sisters products! We are the international authority for sugar claims, with more than 400 products certified in 65 countries. Our mission at Sugarwise is to recognize brands like Squirrel Sisters for making products that are low in added sugar or sweeteners people need to limit—referencing World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
Our Sugarwise logo is the first to indicate to consumers that the product does not have more than 5% of ‘free’ sugar. Scientists at Cambridge University test products to differentiate between a product’s total sugar content and ‘free’ sugar content. ‘Free’ sugar is defined as sugar added to foods by the manufacturer and naturally present in honey, syrups and fruit juices, and does not provide any nutritional value.
As sugar intake is becoming more of a national health concern we want to make it easier for consumers to find healthier options. By incorporating more Squirrel Sisters products into your life you will be taking the steps to a healthier, happier you!
