What’s they story behind Squirrel Sisters?

Health, wellness, food and how it makes us feel has always been a passion of ours. Quite a few years after university Sophie moved to Singapore and Gracie was in London so we decided to start a blog as a fun thing to do together while living on opposite sides of the world.  Initially it was never a business idea, just a passion of ours, something fun to do together.

Our blog was a place for us to document our healthy and delicious discoveries and recipes. At the time we found that most blogs were quite ‘preachy’ and promoted lifestyles that were unrealistic, restrictive and not sustainable so we wanted to create a platform that was all about balance- enjoying life while feeling great; we named our blog Squirrel Sisters (the name came from a nickname which has stuck with us since childhood- Squirrel rhymes with our surname ‘Tyrrell’ and is much more fun to say! Coincidentally and perhaps luckily, we also love nuts!).

Our blog gained a following quickly; People connected with our mission and the fact that we are two normal girls with a busy lifestyle that want to enjoy life while feeling great.

With a growing following we saw an opportunity to turn our blog into a business so after much planning and preparation launched our snack bars in November 2015, which we already had the recipes for.

The recipes were developed by Gracie, when we lived together after university in Balham. Gracie used to make them for Sophie because she has a gluten-intolorance and at the time there wasn’t really anything available that was gluten-free, refined sugar free and delicious. Anything gluten-free that did taste good tended to be full of sugar and additives. So Gracie made the bars for Sophie so she could enjoy a delicious snack that tasted like an indulgent treat with the bonus of health benefits.

Why are we different as a brand?

  • We are a small British family (2 sisters) run company with an award-winning range of 100% natural snack bars; both delicious and full of nutrients.
  • Our products are unique because we are one of the ONLY healthy snack brands available that don’t add any syrups, pastes or sugar alternatives, which is why we have been certified by Sugarwise.
  • So many so many health brands add things that sound much ‘prettier’ than sugar, like coconut nectar blossom, maple syrup and brown rice syrup, which is essentially just as bad as refined sugar- if not worse! We call these products ‘perceived health’. But our products are genuinely healthy because we only use whole dates to bind and sweeten all our products. They are also a healthier choice because they contain fibre, vitamins and minerals.
  • Our bars and share bags also fit in with a number of lifestyles such as vegan, paleo, gluten and refined sugar free, and they are 100% raw. They can be eaten any time of the day; pre/post workout, for breakfast, the snack between meals, after dinner as a healthy pudding- they are the perfect guilt-free treat!
  • Our products are also multi award winning, which really helps us stand out (3 Great Taste Awards, The Women’s Health BEST bar/ball snack award 2018, The Bronze Free From Award, The Veggie ‘Best Snack’).
  • Our bars are also innovative in format, beautifully packaged and delicious… as well as being made with 100% natural ingredients of the highest quality.
  • But we aren’t just a product… we are two sisters with a genuine story on a mission to prove that healthy can be fun and delicious. We started in our family kitchen and now have a product that is available nationwide across the UK and have achieved this on our own without any investment to date.
  • We are also published authors- publishing our first cookbook ‘Naturally Delicious Snacks and Treats’ (Pavilion Books), which is available in all good bookshops and online retailers.
  • We also have our blog, which gives our customer an opportunity to delve further into the Squirrel Sisters world….a lifestyle behind the product.

Where are our products manufactured?

We work with an amazing family-run factory in the UK who are just as passionate as we are about taste, quality and innovation.

Where can I currently buy your products?

You can find us in over 2000 stores across the UK and on nearly every high street. Our main retailers are Waitrose, Holland and Barrett, Whole Foods, Selfridges, Harvery Nichols, Booths (mainly in the North of England), BP Petrol Stations (the ones with M&S’s and on Ocado, Amazon and our website.

Is our packaging recyclable?

Yes it is!  The trays, foil packaging and outer boxes (if you buy a box of 16) are recyclable. It is worth checking with your local council about their regulations though as each area is different. Our packaging can be claimed in ‘group 7’.

Can I get your snacks delivered regularly?

Yes we now offer a subscription service, just head to out shop and follow the instructions

What awards and certifications do you have?

  • Great Taste 2016
  • Great Taste 2017
  • Great Taste 2018
  • Bronze Free From award (2017)
  • The Women’s Health BEST bar/ball Snack Award 2018
  • Vegan Society Certification
  • Sugarwise Certification

Are your snacks good for me?

Our bars are a better choice becasue they contain minerals, vitamins and fibre. We are one of the ONLY healthy snacking brands that doesn’t use any syrups or sugar alternatives. We only use whole dates to bind and sweeten our products, which is why we have been certified by Sugarwise.

Are they organic?

We can’t claim that our bars are organic because some of our ingredients aren’t certified organic. We use the highest quality ingredients possible and sometimes that isn’t the organic option. The goji berries in the raspberry ripple are not organic because organic goji berries are grown in soil which contains high levels of nitrate and results in high levels of sulphites. We use organic cacao ingredients because they’re the best tasting available.

Some of our ingredients which aren’t ‘organic’ are still grown within an organic environment, but because of suppliers being smaller and not having the certification, we cannot claim them as organic.

What makes them sweet?

They are sweetened with high quality whole dates. We don’t use any syrups or pastes, just the whole fruits so that they still have all their fibre and nutrients intact.

Have you got any plans for new products?

What is your orange flavouring made from?

The flavouring is made from the actual orange.  We call it ‘flavouring’ rather than the name of a specific source because it comes from different parts of the tree / plant / fruit which are combined to give the best orange taste.

Why are they more expensive than some of the other ‘raw snack bars’?

The price reflects the quality of our ingredients. When we looked at reducing the costs of our bars, the only way to do this was to reduce the quality of the ingredients, which we would never do. At Squirrel Sisters we never compromise on quality or taste! Taste is and always will be at the forefront of everything we create.
