Q&A with the Squirrel Sisters Team
What has working at Squirrel Sisters taught you about yourself?
I love thinking about ways to help other people from giving them delicious snack bars to helping connect people from a business perspective.
As one of the founders of Squirrel Sisters, what sparked the idea to build your brand?
We were both really passionate about doing something in the health & wellness industry and naively thought it would be simple!
Tea or coffee drinker?
Oooh tricky one I drink a lot more tea but only because I’d be a nervous wreck if I drank that much coffee….but if it’s one I couldn’t live without I’d say tea.
Three essential things that are always in your bag?
Hand cream, lip balm & my paper diary
What’s the best thing/most inspiring thing about working and living in London?
There’s always something to do & even just walking around is inspiring as there are so many different areas with different history.
What item do you never leave the house without?
What’s your go to healthy snack?
Squirrel Sisters bars!! Or apples & nuts
What do you do in your downtime when you’re not squirreling away?
I love cooking (& eating), yoga, reading and spending time with my friends and family.
How do you stay motivated?
I get quite easily overwhelmed so I try to be really organised with my time and what I can achieve as well as always working towards a bigger goal. I also try and meditate as much as I can as it keeps me calm and focussed – it can be hard to find time to do this but it’s so worth doing even just 10 minutes a few times a week.
Do you have a nickname, if so what is it?
Gracie and I call each other ‘sis’ – so original J
What’s your go to Karaoke song?
Lola by the Kinks (or My humps by Black Eyed Peas) although I definitely don’t do karaoke enough to justify having a go-to song let alone two!
What’s your guilty pleasure?
If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?
I’d love to go to South America
Who or where do you look for inspiration?
Podcasts, blogs and books
What were you doing before you started Squirrel Sisters? What pushed you to make it your full time job?
I was working for a design & branding agency in Singapore. I wanted to move home and to work for a food brand, so by the time my husband and I decided we were moving home to London Squirrel Sisters was already in motion.
Any advice for anyone else that is starting their own business with a family member?
Make sure you’re really clear about your roles – Gracie and I have always been really honest about what we do / don’t like doing and what we are and aren’t good at so this has helped to inform our roles as we’ve grown the business and as a result has never caused any issues or tension.
If you could pick any food item at the supermarket, what would you get?
Right now (it’s 4pm on a Tuesday) I would buy some chocolate – 85% Green & Blacks
What five things are on your bucket list right now?
Go to Mexico
Go to Florence
Go wine tasting in Bordeaux
Get a dog (not in the very near future)
Start playing the piano again
Tell us about Squirrel Sisters, what it was like at the very beginning and what it is now?
We worked from home, were just navigating our way around the initial stages of starting a business, eating too many sample bars and tweeting buyers to get our first stockists lined up.
Now we have our own office, a team of 5 wonderful people, we’re in over 1000 stores and have just launched into our first supermarket (Morrisons) and have a recipe book out in April this year. Being founders still isn’t as glamorous as it sounds but we’re gaining more and more momentum all the time, still learning a lot every day and loving (nearly) every minute of it.
What makes working at Squirrel Sisters so special?
Working with Gracie and being such a close-knit team means that everything from getting a mention in a magazine, hearing back from a buyer and seeing customers buying our bars is always so excited and a special moment that is shared between us all.
