We wanted to share a bit about a new accreditation that we’ve been awarded, Sugarwise certification. The reason we’ve been awarded this is because our bars contain no ‘free sugars’ which are essentially added sugars. Free sugars are all sweetners which don’t have other nutritional value, i.e. honey & date syrup only have a level of sugar as opposed to something like dates (which we use) which also contains fibre and various vitamins and minerals.
Sugarwise was started by Rend Platings. With the objective of increasing attention, educating and giving people options on sugar in their food and drink. These objectives are set to be achieved with the use of the Sugarwise certification, which is awarded based on the World Health Organisations guidelines on sugar consumption, of which generally no more than 5% of our daily calories should come from free sugars (added sugars).
Their mission is to:
- Increase the amount of low free sugar choices that people have available to them
- Raise awareness of and generate greater demand for low free sugar
- Facilitate clarity and transparency in labelling so people know what they are buying
- Make it easier for people to make low free sugar choices by improving their environment
They are encouraging retailers to help consumers navigate better choices (like our Squirrel Sisters bars) and help them to steer clear of those products which unexpectedly sneak in added sugars. They are also campaigning for reduced taxes for these products so that they’re more accessible to a wider range of people.
If you’re interested in finding out more about Sugarwise and why it’s better to consume their certified products over those that contain ‘free sugars’ then here are some links to media appearances:
